Miami 2019 (I’ve Seen The Lights Go Out In Canarsie)

https://s3.amazonaws.com/bklyner/bklyner/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Canarsie-2.jpgNot on Broadway

Back in July on a Saturday night on the hottest week of this summer, the lights went out on Broadway as well as the entire 30 block radius spanning Midtown West to the Upper West Side for five hours on the anniversary of the 1977 blackout that plunged the city into a free-for-all crime wave. During this one though and fortunately for citizens and transients in that area at the time, particularly from Times Square to Columbus Circle, the power got wiped out when it was still daylight and the streets were still congested enough with vehicles and pedestrians that nothing really crazy or any purge-like mischief occurred on the streets. People were still milling about, some got involved in directing traffic until the NYPD got deployed and even actors and musicians from theaters and Carnegie Hall gathered on the sidewalks to entertain passerby as their shows were shut down.

Council speaker Corey Johnson made like Giuliani on 9/11 and immediately took charge since Mayor de Blasio was making an ass out of himself trying to pitch progressive policies he stole from Bernie Sanders to a handful of people in Iowa. All in all, it was practically a good time had by all who happened to be there. Although it was surely not appreciated by people relaxing or having company in their apartments or trapped in elevators; or commuters stuck on the trains or standing in a virtual schvitz in the subway stations; or tenants in public housing buildings going through another spontaneous shutdown; or patients and doctors in hospitals and even people seriously paying to watch Jennifer Lopez sing and dance at the Garden (maybe the only redeeming thing about the blackout)

But the aftermath was not so swell, as time came to demand accountability from Con Edison, and out came the righteous indignation bloviating from the likes of our Governor and Mayor. Andrew Cuomo got to do his alpha dog thing and condemned the corporate utility, peppering with threats against them by claiming to use another energy company, and Mayor Big Slow came up with blase’ hypothesis of his own after Con Ed’s ambiguous p.r. response for the causes of the blackout. (hey de Blase’, new insult)

Actually, responses. Crazy Con Eddie’s public relations team seem to be taken aback of the isolated region power failure, as they went back and forth trying to explain what triggered the blackout. Their initial assessment derived from a manhole explosion in the Upper West Side then announced that it was a technical glitch at a substation in Hell’s Kitchen while adamantly refusing to consider a grid power overload. It turned out that it was a faulty transfer that caused the explosion of a 13,000 volt cable underground on the Upper West Side. Which they waited 3 days to confirm after they got it right the first time. Three Days. Granted the mayor and governor were right to question the city’s sole energy providers strange ambiguity in divulging this information, as they themselves also rely on this deceptive tactic to mollify their constituents being the hypocrites they are.

A few days after Con Ed’s revelation, their flacks must have got self-conscious and thought that transparency was the way to go in order to ensure credibility with their customers of the five boroughs. So on the day when they finally told the truth about the Broadway blackout and with the weather forecasts predicting temps pushing 100 on the weekend, Con Edward glibly announced/warned that more blackouts would occur. While honesty like this is welcome, it’s dismaying when it’s coming from a billion dollar energy corporation responsible for power maintenance for 24 hours that should always be taken for granted.

Well the weekend came around and on this way hotter and sultry 100 degree Saturday night, Con Ed’s self-fulling prophecy manifested as the sole energy company decided to shut down power grids in Southeast Brooklyn and parts of Southeast Queens overnight and Sunday morning in a preemptive strike to avoid a citywide blackout

The reactions over 30,000 citizens from those selected areas victimized were admirably cynical and appalled. Especially from a woman in Canarsie who justifiably implied and accused the Con of regional discrimination with their disingenuous claims of preserving electricity.

“You’re making us suffer to preserve who?, Who are you preserving? Why are we not important?”

The answer to that can be clarified with pictures. Because they are worth more than a thousand words from Con Ed’s p.r. toady and from the obtuse statements from de Blasio and Cuomo, along with the latter’s abysmal demands.

These are what and who Con Ed and as much as they feign ignorance Your City are intentionally preserving energy for. These are just the obvious ones. On top is Times Square, which is not the Times Square of old, where the most creative living ad was a steaming cup of coffee. Apparently, the Department Of Buildings must have thought that putting 2, 5 and 20 story and about a block wide L.E.D. television screens and having them run every second was just a grand fucking idea. Somehow, while Con Ed was spinning the cause of the blackout for news consumption and with all these literally humongous obvious signs, they did not mention one time that it was a power overload that caused the cable to explode. Not fucking once. Who are they kidding, oh yeah, everyone.

Really tho, these bigger energy devouring monsters than Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man combined. Then you have to factor in the buildings these screens cloak and all the new luxury tower and hotel development in just under 5 years with Hudson Yards and further up the Hudson River side, plus Long Island City, Williamsburgh and Greenpoint, Park Slope and Downtown Brooklyn and imagine all the energy consumed with the A.C.’s on full blast as citizens in Canarsie and Jamaica sweltered in the darkness.

All the strips of those tony areas must be taken into account to, which are filled with high end bars, clubs and restaurants with rooftop access. Surely businesses in the southern part of Brooklyn had to be sacrificed to maintain those aforementioned town’s vibrancy because Con Ed’s intentional energy inequity and austerity shutdown.

A City Council hearing a few weeks ago addressed this concern. Council Speaker Corey Johnson found enough time to stop dancing and leaping in public like an idiot and grilled Con Ed’s representatives by abbreviating some cuss words with his accusations towards them as he other council members feigned righteous indignation as the electric company continued to bounce these questions off. Since none of those questions brought the scenario of an overload for the excessive use of electricity. Since they mostly focused on trying to maintain the infrastructure of the grid instead of the causation of the blackout. Focusing on the feature instead of the bug, which is that the grid cannot handle the energy consumed from these recently built towers and the overwhelming demand of a bigger and denser population residing in them. Which shouldn’t be a surprise because that scenario was never considered when a transformer exploded in Astoria that made the evening sky turn florescent blue last December that resembled the manifestation of Gozer or the return of the Highlander. But Corey was more concerned with the way Con Ed’s reps optics looked in how they were coming off. Yeah, he’s going to be some mayor.

Surely this will continue to happen while our officials dither and don’t probe deep enough in their inquiries and Con Ed will continue to be the city’s lone energy provider and surely fuck up when the next heatwave or extreme weather condition comes. Because with all the technology and actual demand for renewable energy sources and as the city got taller, denser and overpopulated, Con Ed never thought to build a backup power system deriving from solar or wind. Wonder how they are going to handle Google’s expansion and Disney’s new studios on Soho’s west side?

Maybe this is why Con Ed are being glib. Their VP for “government relations” in charge for dispensing this palatable information used to work for the city’s worthless, unnecessary and agency that has long outlived its usefulness except for the wealthy; the Economic Development Coporation.*

As others will leave and move to Florida for cheaper rents, lower taxes and what they presume will be a better maintained energy grid (although they will be taking a risk with global sea level rise).

The city got lucky there was no looting, rioting and fucking in the streets during the first blackout and the preemptive second one. Next time, especially if Ed pulls off the latter, people are not going to wait to question why or whom. They are going to demand answers with torches and yellow vests.

The Impeachment Of President Trump Begins

New York Times

Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Tuesday that the House would initiate a formal impeachment inquiry against President Trump, charging him with betraying his oath of office and the nation’s security by seeking to enlist a foreign power to tarnish a rival for his own political gain.

Ms. Pelosi’s declaration, after months of reticence by Democrats who had feared the political consequences of impeaching a president many of them long ago concluded was unfit for office, was a stunning turn that set the stage for a history-making and exceedingly bitter confrontation between the Democrat-led House and a defiant president who has thumbed his nose at institutional norms.

“The actions taken to date by the president have seriously violated the Constitution,” Ms. Pelosi said in a brief speech invoking the nation’s founding principles. Mr. Trump, she added, “must be held accountable — no one is above the law.”

She said the president’s conduct revealed his “betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections.”

Ms. Pelosi’s decision to push forward with the most severe action that Congress can take against a sitting president could usher in a remarkable new chapter in American life, touching off a constitutional and political showdown with the potential to cleave an already divided nation, reshape

Mr. Trump’s presidency and the country’s politics, and carry heavy risks both for him and for the Democrats who have decided to weigh his removal.

This is the complaint sent by a whistleblower in the intelligence community to the community’s inspector general, about an “urgent concern” that “the President of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election. The interference, the whistleblower wrote, includes “pressuring a foreign country to investigate one of the President’s main domestic political rivals.”

The complaint is central to the impeachment inquiry launched by House Democrats.

UNCLASSIFIED

August 12, 2019

The Honorable Richard Burr
Chairman
Select Committee on Intelligence
United States Senate

The Honorable Adam Schiff
Chairman
Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence
United States House of Representatives

Dear Chairman Burr and Chairman Schiff:

I am reporting an “urgent concern” in accordance with the procedures outlined in 50 U.S.C. §3033(k)(5)(A). This letter is UNCLASSIFIED when separated from the attachment.

In the course of my official duties, I have received information from multiple U.S. Government officials that the President of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election. This interference includes, among other things, pressuring a foreign country to investigate one of the President’s main domestic political rivals. The President’s personal lawyer, Mr. Rudolph Giuliani, is a central figure in this effort. Attorney General Barr appears to be involved as well.

  • Over the past four months, more than half a dozen U.S. officials have informed me of various facts related to this effort. The information provided herein was relayed to me in the course of official interagency business. It is routine for U.S. officials with responsibility for a particular regional or functional portfolio to share such information with one another in order to inform policymaking and analysis.
  • I was not a direct witness to most of the events described. However, I found my colleagues’ accounts of these events to be credible because, in almost all cases, multiple officials recounted fact patterns that were consistent with one another. In addition, a variety of information consistent with these private accounts has been reported publicly.

I am deeply concerned that the actions described below constitute “a serious or flagrant problem, abuse, or violation of law or Executive Order” that “does not include differences of opinions concerning public policy matters,” consistent with the definition of an “urgent concern” in 50 U.S.C. §3033(k)(5)(G). I am therefore fulfilling my duty to report this information, through proper legal channels, to the relevant authorities.

Like Trump likes to say, I am not a fan of this president. But this “whistleblower”‘s account is plainly based on hearsay and gossip. Of all the things they could impeach Trump on, from years of abusing the emoluments clause to his recent deference to Royal Dictatorship nation Saudi Arabia and whoring our military forces to them, the Democrats and administration insiders are relying on entrapment.

This latest attempt to take down the president with just a year away from the next election, and with two viable candidates capable of beating him (Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard, yeah that’s right, Tulsi Gabbard), the Dems have taken the harsh lesson from Mueller’s shitty report that didn’t find dick about election interference from Russia and are trying to pull an Al Capone on Trump with this weapons deal phone call to Ukraine. When a only a few years before Trump became president, Vice President and current candidate Uncle Joe Biden pulled the same extortion style shit on that country when his idiot son Hunter was involved with a corrupt energy firm that was being investigated and that prosecutor got fired and replaced with someone “solid”.

While Chelsea Manning continues to languish in prison while being fined daily and Edward Snowden is still in exile in Russia because of their heroic and genuine whistleblowing that revealed actual harm to our nation and it’s reputation as a benevolent dispenser of democracy and trustworthy steward of our personal freedoms and privacy, and being that this whistleblower is a CIA agent the establishment DC Democrats are relying on for impeachment, this guy is more like a whistlemole.

And again in Brownsville at the Utica Ave. Station, a man stabbed a woman three times on the platform.

In Bed-Stuy, police responding to a street fight alleged that they were being fired upon during the melee. For some reason, the cops did not draw their guns. This happened while a barbeque party thrown at the Marcy Houses was being brought to a halt by cops deployed to the area, which led to residents and citizens arguing with the police then escalated when the cops sprayed pepper spray on them trying to get them to disperse, leading to 11 people getting arrested and three cops injured from bottles thrown at them during the melee.

Footage recorded by citizens shows a man filming the cops shouting at people to back up then being threatened and pushed by a cop. The man continues to film and catches a group of cops macing a man and shoving him into a fence and onto the ground. A woman who was also filming the “disbursing” was hit by a cop and knocked to the ground too and wound up with five stitches in her head.

Now there is another lawsuit against the city and Mayor de Blasio’s NYPD for the gang-styled assault as the Marcy residents sue them for 85 million dollars. Fox and Friends decided to cover this chaotic incident induced by excessive force by the cops with effusive praise for them and erroneously tied it to the water attacks on officers the previous month, yet they made no mention of shots being fired.

Manhattan

In the West Village, a woman was attacked by a man who suckerpunched her while she was walking her dog. Even though the lunatic was still milling around the area, five cops dispatched there behaved indifferently to the victim and did not pursue him. This attack was preceded by only ten minutes of another assault on a woman who got whacked with a wooden board a few blocks away. So it wasn’t like the cops were sent for no reason, although there is no reason to deliberately avoid serving and protecting the public.

This random assault was followed by other attacks in the West Village where race played a factor. A man got shoved and fell on the sidewalk by a man who yelled a racial slur at him. Then three more people got violently attacked by the same kook a week later in one evening as he hit a 64-year-old woman with a stick. Then he went to Soho and ran up behind a woman and hit her with a brick, then back up to Chelsea where he punched a man in the face while calling him a honky. What was de Blasio’s NYPD doing when 9-1-1 was called after these attacks?

The psychopath was finally arrested a week later after he randomly attacked a 64-year-old woman. Turns out he’s a homeless man with a mental condition. So did anybody call the Thrive number for him? Or decided not to because of his warm smile?

And again in Midtown, a man smashed ten LED screens on the walls of the 8th Avenue 42nd St. Station with a brick, causing $30,000 worth of damage and possibly millions of dollars of ad revenue from multiple ads that were being shown every minute. Just like the LinkNYC smasher last April, this guy may have done a good (although violent) service for the citizenry irritated by these flickering (and surveillance laden) eyesores.

And the MTA and the city thought these screens would prevent any sort of vandalism like graffiti on regular still life advertisement posters.

In Central Park, a person threw a chunk of concrete at three cops that were on the beat at a concert.

Also in Central Park, a man was found beaten to death lying in an empty pool.

GDUZSDB66NCX7FRMV5OKPREG6AThis is considered a “bicycle” by certain bike advocacy groups and bloggers

On the same day at the Park, two cyclists crashed into each other and another and a man fell off his bike as he was diddling on his cellphone.

In Times Square, a man shoplifted bottles of juice from an overpriced chain cafe and threatened workers at knifepoint that tried to stop him. He then ran away even though he had a cane and was still holding the juices and knife in his hands. That’s one ambidextrous petty thief.

Also in Times Square, a wise ass on a motorcycle let his muffler cause a shotgun effect that scared the shit out people sitting on the tkts bleacher seats and passerby on the sidewalks and streets, causing a stampede and leading to nine people injured. Suckers.

Pedestrians fleeing Times Square

Again in Times Square, 300 gallons of diesel fuel spilled in the basement of a luxury hotel, leading to an evacuation of the premises.

In Chelsea, a man got hit by a hit-and-run bike rider when he was standing in the bike lane and died from his injuries days later.

Also in the Upper East Side, a man that missed the bus because he wasn’t at bus stop hailed a cab and told the driver to go to the next stop. Then the man ran up to and boarded the bus and pulled a gun on the bus driver and yelled at him. Resourcefulness, insanity and an exercise in futility all represented at once.

Again in the Upper East Side, a 68-year-old woman got hit by a police officer driving a traffic patrol vehicle while walking in the crosswalk.

9/11 : 18

New York City, New York

The last attack on America in NYC and Washington D.C has reached eighteen years. While not a rounded out number, this makes the anniversary of the terrorist attack the legal age to vote. The picture above is the annual light tribute that gets lit up on this day at the location where the twin towers once stood. The last attack on America in NYC and Washington D.C has reached eighteen years.

Ever since this was started seventeen years, the lights would usually go on a few days before and a few days after 9/11. Recently it was pointed out on two local journalists a few days ago on in a brief discussion on social media by the NY Post’s Nicole Genaris and the Wall St. Journal’s Katie Honan. Which got me to thinking especially since this day doesn’t seem to be garnering much remembrance anymore in my opinion. Especially with the way corporate news is covering it now, which is coming off in an obligatory fashion (speaking of fashion, the fashion industry holds it annual galas and designer shows on the week of this tragic day).

So I propose that maybe these lights could be lit for other tragic anniversaries that made the attack on 9/11 possible. Like lighting the tribute on August 6. The day when George W. Bush received his Presidential Daily Brief about Bin Laden’s determination to attack America.

cropped-3661.jpgJune 2001, a few months before President Bush was warned about the attacks

And also lighting it up for the horrendous decisions and policies of the national tragedy’s aftermath that continue to kill civil service workers. Like on September 13 2001, when George W. Bush’s EPA commissioner Christie Todd Whitman announced that the air quality was safe to breathe in Ground Zero, even though the air downtown was still thick and acrid with visible residue. This lethal falsehood has led to the slow deaths of hundreds of firefighters and police men and women. Which still continues to this day. And also lighting it up for the horrendous decisions and policies of the national tragedy’s aftermath that continue to kill civil service workers.

The light tribute should also commemorate the date October 26, 2001 with the ratification of the Patriot Act; written by frightened and calculating congress members under the rubric to protect the nation from terrorism but wound up eviscerating the first and fourth amendment rights of American citizens, which is what also what Osama Bin Laden set out to do. This abominable legislation has led to crackdowns and clampdowns of protests and the assembling of them by citizens. And also to wanton abuse of needle in the haystack searches of everyone’s personal phone and internet data records by federal agencies, notably the NSA which Edward Snowden exposed only a few years ago. Thanks to the Patriot act, which the majority of congressional officials didn’t even get a chance to finish reading but still voted for it except for Barbara Lee of California, unpermitted personal data usurpation has become normalized and is the business model of the notorious tech corporations Google, Amazon, Facebook and Twitter.

That’s what this day means now. And thousands of Americans and millions of lives in the Middle East and Africa through regime change and proxy wars to prevent terror have been sacrificed in the name of homeland security. While the lights are a solemn reminder to everyone whose relatives unnecessarily died that day, the lessons of 9/11 still have not been learned, as we are told we are still under threat almost 2 decades on.

And in another awful post 9/11 consequence, turns out the tribute of light is also a problem:

ABC News:

The illuminating installation on display for seven days leading up the anniversary of the hijacked airliner attacks that brought down the two World Trade Center towers, killing nearly 3,000 people, may serve as solemn beacons of remembrance for most people. But the exhibit also coincides with the annual migration of tens of thousands of birds crisscrossing the New York region — including songbirds, Canada and yellow warblers, American redstarts, sparrows and other avian species — that get confused and fly into the towers of light, circling and expending energy and threatening their lives, according to officials at New York City Audubon. Andrew Maas, a spokesman for NYC Audubon, told ABC News on Tuesday that the artificial light interferes with the birds’ natural cues to navigate. Circling within the lights can exhaust the birds and potentially lead to their demise, he noted.

“We know it’s a sensitive issue,” he said, adding that NYC Audubon has worked for years with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and the Municipal Art Society of New York, which created the exhibit, to balance protecting the birds while providing the temporary memorial.

We will never forget 9/11. But it’s interesting how much we, meaning our appointed leaders and corporations, will fuck it all up trying to get everybody not to forget.
