Manhattan

In the Flatiron District, an underground 85-year-old steam pipe exploded and caused a massive crater and a 70 ft. geyser of white smoke and asbestos that covered buildings and the streets on 4 blocks.

After showing up at the end of the day because he felt the severity of the explosion and the environmental damage it caused didn’t warrant his immediate attention, Mayor Big Slow de Blasio hastily claimed that the air was safe to breathe there in spite of the evacuations of 50 buildings, the closing of businesses on and the barricaded shutdown of 5th avenue for a week.

It’s an amazing thing. The Flatiron District and Madison Square has been through a massive upheaval with more high end stores, more luxury hotels and condo towers, a complete yet retarded street redesign and that even more retarded pedestrian plaza and al fresco barsteraunt that was plopped in the middle of the fork between 5th Avenue and Broadway, yet this dumb ass city let a rusty near century old steam pipe rot away during all this hyperdevelopment. This shows where the cities priorities are. Blindly and mindlessly rubber stamping these buildings and projects. And also keeping their heads lodged up their asses.

Good thing City Hall toady Eric Phillps was there to document the mayor making the obligatory optical gesture of mayoral leadership.

Lean in there, William. That city crater is the definitive symbol of the moral center of you, your advocates and your monied donors.

In Greenpoint, a man cut off another driver with his car on the boulevard, then took out a box cutter and started swinging it at the other man’s face. And a bike lane would not have done squat.

Oh this is so fucking funny, in the lower income towns of East New York, Brownsville and Crown Heights (yes Crown Heights is still low income), stolen shitty Citibikes have been left abandoned on the streets after being stolen from people or stations after users improperly dock them for riding back to the hood. This is what happens when you deny services or transportation alternatives to undesirable and transit desert areas. And I mean the assholes behind the bike share program who determine and believe those areas are undesirable.

https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/rikers1.jpgRikers Island, pariah government center on scrumptious speculative real estate.

From the elected denizens occupying City Hall, they have begun the dizzying ill conceived official program to shut down Rikers Island and transfer all convicts present and future to four jails in the boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Manhattan. But not Staten Island, because supposedly no one commits crimes there.

This is where the Mini-Rikers will be:

  • Manhattan Detention Center, 125 White Street, Manhattan, 10013 (The Tombs)
  • Brooklyn Detention Center, 275 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, 11201
  • Queens Detention Center, 126-01 82nd Avenue, Kew Gardens, 11415
  • NYPD Tow Pound, 320 Concord Avenue, Bronx, 10454

This transition is suppose to take a decade or if crime drops first. But apparently these fauxgressive hacks aren’t even going to wait for the latter, especially now that Gov. Andy has decided to up the ante with his jackass boisterousness and wants Rikers shut down earlier than that.

Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Corey Johnson announced an agreement today to move forward on closing Rikers Island and creating a smaller, safer and fairer borough-based jail system. Together with the Council Members representing these areas, the Mayor and Speaker have agreed to a single public review process for four proposed sites in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens. These sites together will provide off-Island space for 5,000 detainees, and will include the three existing DOC facilities in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, as well as a new site in the Bronx located at 320 Concord Avenue in Mott Haven.

“This agreement marks a huge step forward on our path to closing Rikers Island,” said Mayor de Blasio. “In partnership with the City Council, we can now move ahead with creating a borough-based jail system that’s smaller, safer and fairer. I want to thank these representatives, who share our vision of a more rehabilitative and humane criminal justice system that brings staff and detainees closer to their communities.”

“Today is a historic day, as we are yet one step closer to closing Rikers Island.  The New York City Council is proud to have spearheaded the historic Close Rikers movement by creating the Lippman commission and passing legislation enacting many of its recommendations. The Council has also funded innovative programming to keep cases out of the criminal justice system altogether, such as the CLEAR and HOPE programs, which provide treatment instead of incarceration to those with substance abuse issues. We all know that closing jails on Rikers means opening more humane, community-based facilities elsewhere. I am proud to stand with my Council colleagues and thank them for their support on this crucial issue. I look forward to working closely with Mayor de Blasio, my Council colleagues representing these communities, and the communities themselves in finally achieving our shared goal of closing Rikers Island,” said Speaker Corey Johnson.

The Office Of The Mayor

This is being done because the violent environment and corruption in Rikers has become too endemic. As opposed to the equally well know graft in the city and state government high offices for a century and at a pinnacle today? Is this really what voters, meaning the less than 25% who showed up to elect these dusted democrats, really asked for from them.

What are the costs going to be to retrofit those four jails and how they are going to manage to fit all those prisoners and even staff. Especially what the speculative costs will be to convert that garage in the Bronx into a functioning high security apparatus. Most essential is how this goal of 5,000 convicts going to be accomplished to justify these transfers.

As simplistic and cynical as it sounds, which this utopian program resembles the former in spades, the only way this can be achieved is by not convicting anyone who commits crimes it seems. Which de Blasio has already assured with recent accusations by a police captain of stations lessening crime charges and the recent and similar doctoring and reclassifying of crimes committed at homeless shelters

As for sounding like the latter, it has been known for a few years that the Gentrification Industrial Complex are salivating at the prospects of all that scrumptious real estate waiting to be taken. Even the Corrections Officers Union President Elias Husamudeen smells a rat and sees this for the fauxgressive ruse it is. Although coming from the namesake of the commission report that inspired the Rikers shutdown, Johnathan Lippman, it ain’t like those interested in all that city property are shy about their passively heinous ulterior motives masking as a humanity cause:

…former New York State chief judge Jonathan Lippman, who heads the New York City Council-created criminal justice reform commission that oversees the Rikers-study committee, said it’s only natural to explore “potentially doing some of the things we’ve done with other vacant, large pieces of land, whether it be benefiting public health, education, research institutions.”

But he also sought to emphasize, and then re-emphasize, that real estate is in no way the central focus of his committee.

“At the outset, let me say that the future of Rikers Island as a physical location follows—and certainly doesn’t precede—improving our jail system,” he said.

“The political center of this will be about how we make the system more humane and just,” he said, “and at the same time recognize that you do have a very strategically placed and valuable piece of real estate there that could have a multitude of public policy purposes to develop it.”

None of these elected idiots surely not have thought through this but predictably are following de Faustio’s (bottom) line. Particularly Speaker Corey Johnson who in just a short month after exhorting that he was going to be a bulldog critic and a check on the mayor’s machinations and decisions has devolved into the typical partisan loyal neoliberal lapdog he is. And Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz who has officially thrown her hands up and quit and gave her approval, selling out her constituents and her credibility.

While we all want to live in a city or even a world without crime, this program is being foisted on the public without a clarified thought or what the ramifications might be or how much the goddamn new Mini-Rikers are going to cost.

And one huge fact is if that when this transfer officially begins, will that endemic violent and corrupt prison culture will carry on in the new jails or will exacerbate. Because this is clearly not going to happen overnight or most certainly, well, never.

Because in Rikers Island, a correction officer was attacked and beat down by five prisoners as a guard in the same room just stood there and watched and did not help his fellow officer, who wound up with severe spinal and neck injuries from the savage gang attack. The first one who barged in the room planned the premeditated the attack during a phone call according to another inmate.

We shall see how this shit enfolds. This post illustrates that this isn’t starting off well.

Wrath Of The Scumlords: NYCHA Takes Responsibility For Misleading Lead Reports By Making Their Tenants Lives Difficult And Propagandizing And Flattering Commissioner Olatoye, Two Queens Town’s Gentrifications Gives Affordable Rent Tenants The Heave-Ho, A 100-Year-Old Woman Getting Pressured To Leave While Incapacitated, And A Guy Convicted By A Judge Of Being An All Around And Actual Scumlord

https://i2.wp.com/www.asafehome.net/SiteGraphics/SMII_BrokenDoorwDeadbolt.jpg Left to right: dramatization of breaking a lock for lead prevention, the “Lead Lady” Shoya Olatoye, senior citizen and tenant Justa Lopez placed on notice, convicted criminal landlord/developer Daniel Melamud.

Looks like the folks at NYCHA and probably their purveyors at city hall might be taking their jobs seriously now after last week’s revelation of covering up bogus lead inspections and infinite other oversights. And they are not showing a millimeter of class about it.

After appointing a redundant position to assure accountability, for real this time, Shoya and her new crack committee decided to take immediate yet invasive action for actual lead inspections by breaking the locks if no one is home at the time. Leading to new aggravation and inconvenience for the suffering tenants who will certainly be at work or picking up kids at school, for this effort will mostly be done mid-afternoon. Also obviously for more costs with replacing locks and making new keys. Though it’s not certain if some deduction from tenants rents will be considered from this moronic bureaucratic decision, as if the year of neglecting to do federal ordered inspections isn’t enough of a price to pay. Or even if the people they hired are even certified professionals, for it turns out that NYCHA did not even vet the contractors assigned to inspect and repaint the units. Fucking grave.

As NYCHA is now a functioning entity on lead extraction, instead of previously being an optical one, they actually have been quite active on asbestos removal. And just has reckless and irresponsible as the agency’s recent approach on lead, as evidenced at the Seward Park Houses on the Lower East Side by the FDR drive. As the contractors they hired for the toxic removal placed contaminant tents on the project’s playground, exactly right next to the jungle gym and a slide, denying the kids of tenants a safe place to have fun for the last 3 months and certainly for the rest of their remaining childhood

Asbestos huts in a dilapidated playground at the Seward Houses. Sick and twisted.

This is absolutely deranged. And it looks like those playthings need a lead inspection and repainting itself, for it looks like it hasn’t been upgraded in a decade. With this revolting development here, this spot looks like prime bait for the odious NextGen plan to take  unused space like this and parking lots for future development of new buildings with market rate rentals with help from the private real estate industry. Which is naturally the case here, as is NextGen being a program for city sanctioned plunder of government property for predator developers.

While this irresponsible misuse of an public funded amenity is outrageous, NYCHA’s asbestos abatement process is standard procedure.

There’s a lot more where this came from, check out this woman’s youtube channel, she’s got over a dozen more documented flagrant offenses and NYCHA cruelty and brazenness. This building, which is in the super trendy world fascination destination Brooklyn™ makes it seem that Steve Croman, Jared Kushner or Daniel Malemud was running NYCHA. (Yeah, who’s Malemud, you’ll see at the end).

Well, it looks like the Commish is starting to feel the pangs of shame from the general public, mostly from the poor, demanding her termination despite the arrogant, obstinate orders from Day Mayor de Faustio demanding that she remain in her undeserved post. And even from the deluded Ms Olatoye herself, who absolutely has not learned a fucking thing, for she has just summoned her staffers to distribute a hilarious petition letter to the suffering tenant associations for them to sign to advocate for her to remain at her job, as she is about to face the city council in a few days:

A blind person can see the defensive nature of this petition. This letter might be the first of it’s kind that was actually commandeered by an executive instead of the normal protocol which involves actual community participation. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty fucking demented. What does Shoya via the petition mean by we? The royal we, maybe.

With this obnoxious self-preservation letter NYCHA again finds the funds, in spite of being $17 billion dollars in debt and being forced to seek the aid of the real estate overlords, to piss away on bureaucratic bullshit instead of making their buildings habitable and depriving the civil and civic rights and peace of mind of it’s residents. As is wont of the perpetually troubled and corrupt agency, for with the dispatching of actual lobbyists at the bidding of Shoya it falls directly in line for their historic usage of lawyers commissioned to boot tenants out into the streets. A NY Daily News story from 2013 showed that NYCHA under the direction of asshole technocrat John Rhea spent as much money and hiring on lawyers (8 million plus at the time for 98 lawyers), that you and their poor tenants they hassled paid for, than they spent on bricklayers (6 million plus at time at a total of 65 workers). And roofers (2 million plus for 29 workers) and exterminators (3.8 million for 90 workers) combined. Surely this is a big factor in the decrepit and decaying conditions of these publicly funded buildings and the ongoing deliberate attempts to dissuade poor citizens from living there.

The crazy lady commissioner apparently is cognizant of the reaming she is going to get even from the self-serving hacks of the city council. The majority of electeds are looking for her removal and it syncs well with prominent members looking to extend their terms in another voter referendum, the third time it’s been considered and a sound trashing would make for great optics among voters, if they show up of course. Despite that, she still has got to go. And go down hard.

Meanwhile in Astoria and Long Island City in Queens, rent-stabilized tenants have been under duress from their stingy and avaricious proprietors for over a year, driven by the hyped cachet and hyperdevelopment in those respective towns and exorbitant rent speculation/fabrication in both. A fire that engulfed the L.I.C. building that forced section 8 tenants to take up shelter with their relatives as the city-ordered repairs and renovations continued to be delayed by the building’s owners, conveniently keeping them away.

The rent-regulated building in Astoria is another quite sordid affair as the tenants there have been in constant battle with a proclaimed Christian non-profit that has ran the building for quite some time now wants to kick all of them out so they can run the place as a homeless shelter. In a morbid twist of irony, the group known as NYSUM, the  claims that they are not making enough money to sustain affordable housing there and would do better if they just house the homeless, which current city policies have turned into a profitable quasi-industry. Just ask some certain hoteliers. To do this, which NYSUM has been doing for almost a year and a half, they have relied on less measured predatory tactics like disconnecting free wifi and hardcore ones like tearing up a garden the tenants cared for and sending goons under the non-profits name to intimidate the tenants.

The tenants there have been persistent and have been able to remain. Unfortunately so is NYSCUM who served them eviction notices. The evil being dealt by the pseudo-Christian group cannot even be measured considering that the people that they are disenfranchising from their homes will certainly be homeless with nowhere to go because of the lunatic market rate induced on their town, and clearly will not be invited back despite being qualified for the non-profits purported mission because of their forced status. That they are causing. NYSCUM is more like it.

In another case of savage cruelty and contempt for the aged, Justa Lopez, a 100-year-old woman and resident of this city for 70 years, received an eviction notice from her landlord accusing her of not being present at her residence even though she got injured from the uneven floor she walks on. If the building management would have repaired the damaged surface they would have noticed her presence, so it seems that refusing service to her is another way, another cheap underhanded tactic to not acknowledge her existence and a deliberate criminal way to gradually force her out. And with her time away from her home getting healed at a nursing home makes her tenancy status conveniently untenable, giving the landlords fabrications of her convalescence at a nursing home then her daughter’s house as an extra residency a warped and technically legal justification to deny to return to her rent-stabilized apartment on the upper east side.

In a little bit of good news and rare justice being served. A landlord tormenting rent-stabilized tenants in a building he ran in Crown Heights in an brutal and common practice attempt to spread gentrification by refusing to turn on heat and gas and doing environmentally hazardous gut renovations on empty apts. of the tenants he bought off causing contaminants to spread throughout the building in daily clouds of lead, got thrown in the slammer for his egregious and nefarious dirty deeds which included grand larceny and forgery for creating shell companies to buy more properties and flip them for profits (sound familiar, Bill? you recall Rivington House?) and falsifying applications to get loans from H.U.D. (sound familiar, Shoya and you too Bill?).

The NY Post determined this vile man with a vile plan guilty plea as a admission of being an unadulterated scumbag. Which if one can humblebrag is a validation of my term for this kind of lowlife and bag of dicks and shit assembled and stitched in human form.

The scumlord phenomenon and scourge might just catch on, and it damn well should to cure the affordability crisis pandemic and give NYCHA executives and this fucking mayor a sense of shame in perpetuity as long as these unnecessary conditions continue for the real affordable housing plan in the 5 boroughs.

The BQX Trolley Car Is Here, So This Line Is Getting Built Regardless

#FuckNo!!! (photo by Gabriella Bass, NY Post)

Brooklyn, New York

A day after the same newspaper reported that the ground transit line was going absolutely nowhere, this thing arrived from France.

Despite an outright vehement rejection from the communities of Queens and Brooklyn, civic and economic experts, and frustrated drivers on the streets where this thing will pass through, this thing and the low-ball estimate 2.5 billion dollar plan that will fuck up these areas for the next half decade or maybe more is obviously being greenlighted no matter what. This must be part of the mandate the mayor was talking about.

This thing is happening even though there was a short film that thoroughly pointed out the negative ramifications on the citizenry and businesses, and stupidity of this unnecessary service, which can be less costly supplanted by providing more buses and more cops to direct traffic at the busiest intersections.

Even though the stupid mayor with his stupid feud with Cuomo and Albany will not get this support or funding, stemming surely from the city and state rescue plan the Day Mayor doesn’t want to be involved with. Mostly this stupid collective of minstrels, these friends of the BQX, doing the bidding of predatory developers that want this pretty joyride are not going to stop pushing this because they wasted so much money promoting it and so much money buying city hall to get it on the E.D.C.’s agenda.

This is getting built no matter what. This is getting built at the expense of the daily deteriorating service and infrastructure of the transit system, including the city buses. This is getting built without any projections on how the trolley is going to run or even the effect on the environment of the towns, roads and even highways that the next 5 years or more of construction it’s going to cause. This is being built despite it being on flood zones because of rising sea levels caused by the continuing extreme effects of climate change (I thought these progressive folk where believers of this topic). And there will probably take a new bridge to build also or modernization of the Pulaski Bridge, for this line traverses a creek on the border of the boroughs.

https://i0.wp.com/weheartastoria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Brooklyn-Queens-Streetcar-Proposal-Map-NYC.jpg

This is being built because real estate owns this city and they own the fauxgressive mayor and city council. Thanks to de Faustio and the apathy, cynicism, ignorance and fear from the voting public.

This shit is being built regardless of what you want, don’t want and what you think. This will probably be officially announced without notice like the city does with homeless shelters or even a four month public art installation.

This thing is nothing but another marketing toy for the Gentrification Industrial Complex. Including the lame ferry and road shrinking bike lanes.

Hopefully, and there is a scant amount of hope these days, this will get struck down hard because of the aforementioned rejection by the areas’ residency and of course by the vindictive governor, which strange enough both happen to be right in this. Unfortunately more money, millions of it, is going to pissed away studying this as it was last year in addition of doing outreach and advertising in free borough weekly papers.

It doesn’t mean that the frugal citizenry concerned have to stop condemning it though. Even though this boondoggle couldn’t be nipped at the bud, there is still the power of words to stop this bullshit from happening.

And even video snippets to convey the general sentiment about that trolley lying in wait at the Brooklyn Navy Yard:

Fuck the BQX. Fix the fucking subway and improve bus service NOW!

Update

The board chairwoman of the Friends of the BQX (and the enemies of the citizenry and efficient transit) is Jessica Schumer, daughter of hack Senate Minority Leader (and minor person) N.Y. Senator Chuck Schumer.

Another update:

The planners, friends, or whatever the fuck they are have cut the route in half and will no longer go to Sunset Park. Looks like the Gentrification Industrial Complex no longer sees any crass affordable luxury tower overdevelopment potential for the working class area.

Wrath And Weak Persecution Of The Scumlords: Fire Engulfs REAL Affordable Housing Building In The Bronx And Two City Big Shot Realtors Get A Wristslap Fine And A Feeble Prison Term After Yom Kippur.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DKvK95ZUIAAYVWE.jpgAffordable housing inferno

Bronx, N.Y.

Residents of 1920 Walton Ave. affordable housing building of the now misnomered town called Mount Hope, mostly working poor, disabled and elderly, woke up early one morning to find their building on fire and their lives upended and out on the street with the clothes on their back. And also with practically no idea of where they will be in the future. Although with the way this city treats the functioning members of society and senior citizens, probably in hotels and motels in the area or in the outer boroughs, despite the city’s claims of keeping them close to their original addresses.

The fire was determined to be accidental by the NYFD because of faulty electrical wiring in the ceiling of the building which is where it ignited and spread on it’s way down to the apartments. Nearly 200 firemen where dispatch to put out the destructive 5-alarm blaze.

It’s easy and understandable to suspect arson, knowing the city’s and the Bronx’s history during it’s worst economic and drug epidemic crisis, but there is no doubt that willful neglect by the current and prior owners led to this tragedy. The building according to DNA, has a notorious history of elevator disrepair going back to 1995 and had prior instances of fire hazard faulty wiring issues. The building, which is currently owned by get this, 1920 Walston Ave. LLC, continued to deny service requests of the tenants, who were clearly too poor and powerless to pay any mind to. And also vulnerable because of the fact that they were lucky enough to be able to live in an apartment at the amount they were paying in a city with maniacal rising rates.

It is not known who or whom consists of 1920 Walton Ave LLC, because it’s base is in Lakewood, N.J. and you need a password to find out. The free newspaper Metro could not even get a hold of these mysterious owners.

The burn about this, no pun intended, is how did this building miss out and did not seem to qualify for Mayor de Faustio’s affordable housing plan for the preservation of such affordable housing. How did this one miss out in the mayor’s promise to end the tale of two cities? This building would have been a shining example if it got the proper attention from the mayor and especially from the perpetually inefficient D.O.B. that for years let this building rot without proper and diligent intervention. This is truly a disgrace and a harbinger of the city’s priorities in their lame version of service or blatant lack of it in helping the lower class and indigent.

It’s too late for the former residents of 1920 Walton, but after years of languishing in hotels before some of the 90 shelters as promised by Mayor Big Slow get built wherever in the Bronx or if they are lucky to win the miniscule affordable apt. lottery in one of his donor’s towers, there is a slight bright side to others trying to maintain and remain in their own affordable apts and that is the recent decisions regarding two mega-developers and their own transgressions; Steve Croman and Icon Realty.

This is Steve.

Steve Croman recently got convicted and sentenced for trying to scam banks with a partner of his for false claims of market rate apts and for 8 years for terrorizing rent-stabilized tenants in the East Village to force them out to execute the scam. This notorious scumbag relied on a sadistic ex-cop to intimidate his fiscally responsible tenants who were not paying enough for living there and in his buildings in East Harlem, by stalking, breaking and entering and reading their mail. He was basically Steve’s economic hit man.

For the amount of time and energy this demon was harassing his tenants with his hired goon, he also used the pioneering abusive tactic of using gut renovation of vacant apts., causing environmental noise and air quality hazards to goad rent-stabilized tenants into leaving and even recent market rate tenants to intimidate them if the speculation gets a little higher for even what they can afford. 8 years is not enough for this kind of evil, and even though it has passed, he certainly did not deserve to observe the Jewish holy days despite paying 3 million to do it. He did get to lose his broker license, but he still gets to reap the rewards of his insidious and heinous labors from his owner status which is less than the 45 million dollars that he was going for but he will still be able to throw a big hedonistic homecoming party in the Hamptons once he gets out and if he survives a shivving.

Steve’s pioneering and monstrous tactics have inspired a comparably young predatory developers in his neck of the metropolis to do the same, only to lead to fiscal punishment for their equally heinous efforts, and it’s not the advisor to the current POTUS (which may be why he was pushing hard through the weekly paper he once owned for Figurehead Trump to win). Icon Realty has been using the same diabolical, contemptible scheme to induce their lower-paying tenants to leave. Although amateurish in comparison, they still mismanaged their buildings enough with roughshod and reckless construction with making the renovations to apts by making them smaller to attract dumb transients to pay the preposterous market rate, in effect causing pervasive dusty conditions and the ceilings below them to crack. Icon also repeatedly shut off the gas on tenants for lengthy periods of time. Instead of hiring a goon to scare residents although they did engage in persistent attempts at buying out their tenants, Icon hired a publicity firm to ward off the hundreds of accusations of shitty treatment they were giving their tenants. Icon also exploited the tragedy of the 119-121 apartment building explosion to force a long time beloved small restaurant Stage to go out of business.

For all the chaos they caused and after years of enabling by the slow process of the justice system, the D.A. in conjunction with the REBNY jesters Mayor de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo, fined Icon a measly $500,000 to be paid back to the city. Which seems just a pittance after all the misery and inconvenience their intentional and kind of clumsy nefarious acts have caused, which could have been prevented and avoided if the D.O.B. had even a percentage of competence and efficiency. But it seems the speculators for real estate have too much sway and influence that it takes precedence over regulation and enforcement

The lessons and decisions being meted to Steve and Icon are only a temporary fix, and seemingly in tune for the coming elections. The problem with these recent judgements is that these guys should have been investigated a long time ago. Especially the case of those unnamed elusive villains who run and burned 1920 Walton Ave. in Mount Hope. Mostly, these properties should have been priority one in this supposed preserving of affordable housing as well as the NYCHA buildings.

Steve Corman might no longer have control or say anymore over his properties but Icon still does as well as many, many other baby predators. And they all are big contributors to City Hall on Park Row and the State House in Albany. In spite of these recent charges, their records show transgressive recidivism and cannot be trusted. Even though Icon got pinched a little bit from the city, they are still entrusted to preserve the affordable housing they lord over. The only progress is for harsher penalties and longer sentences in prison. Particularly in a cell next to one going under gut renovation for the entirity of his or her term.

Colluding Developer/Real Estate And Contracting Firms Ordered To Pay $76,000,000 To Workers In Money Laundering Conspiracy To Deny Their Complete Wages And Benefits.

NY Daily News: Union workers win $76M from Midtown construction firm that used alter-ego company to skirt collective bargaining

A Midtown construction company accused of creating a bogus business to avoid union wages and union benefit payments has to cough up $76 million to the workers it cheated.

In a decision with potentially far-reaching consequences for city developers, Manhattan Federal Court Judge Colleen McMahon found that Navillus Tile fraudulently invented an alter-ego company to try and get around collectively bargained agreements it had with several major city construction unions.

The company also had one of its legitimate offshoot businesses act as a Navillus stand-in on a job it wanted to do non-union, the ruling found.

The collusion also involved real estate giant Related, one of the city’s most prolific developers.

It knowingly engaged with one of the alter-ego companies on its Upper East Side luxury development on 92nd St., Judge McMahon’s ruling said.

In her scathing, 95-page ruling delivered late Thursday after a three-year court battle, McMahon said that Navillus’ founder, Donal O’Sullivan had “perjured himself” more than once and noted that another company principal was “obviously lying” in some testimony.

Her feelings were clear in the $76 million award — a massive hit for Navillus Tile.

The financial pain has to be carried by Navillus, which was the main generator of the alter-ego scam, but developer Related – which is currently doing the city’s Hudson Yards project — also played a role, the attorney noted.

The lengths certain people will go through to save a boatload of money in the name of progress or hyper-development, depending who you ask.

This lawsuit was filed 3 years ago when it was discovered that $35 million dollars never made it to the checks of their hard working employees. Navillus, a masonry company that usually gets 4 to 5 star ratings, shit on their workers and fucked them over despite the efficiency that gave them accolades. Related Properties, who run some of the biggest commercial and residential buildings in Manhattan and tonier parts of the outer boroughs, saw nothing at all wrong with partaking with Navillus in laundering the workers hard earned pay through 2 bogus firms with bland and downright stupid names so they can employ and underpay desperate immigrant workers and thought they were shrewd enough to fool them and their union lawyers. Really, Time Square Construction?

And for what cause. Instead of paying them the 35 million they earn and nefariously stealing it, now they are out an extra 41 million and who knows how much more to their counselors trying to defend their stupid grand theft scheme. It’s amazing that these fiends have this much money and reputation to burn.

But they and the city, especially the DOB, doesn’t care because the city has to keep improving. Every little crack on the sidewalk is prime real estate ready for taking and laying mortar, steel and glass up to the skies. Tower building is arguably the only manufacturing the city has done in the past decade and a half. Governor Andy didn’t give them those skyscraper welfare tax abatements just for his developer donor overlords to do nothing.

The sick thing about this criminal conspiracy is the fact that apparently no one from Navillus or Related will go to damn jail and serve 5 to 10 years, which I presume would be the same amount of time that some poor schmuck or recidivist would get if they tried to hold up a bodega or deny people their collective bargaining rights and steal their wages and funnel it through bogus shell companies. I guess because they have contributed so much and continue to add to the hyper-development of the city that these two corporations are too big to fail also. For they are involved in the construction of the massive Hudson Yards mini-metropolis and other city affordable housing mixed-use tower projects and government buildings.

It’s a terrible predicament with the over-saturation of development suffocating the city, but at least the people building it will get paid in full. It be a lot better if these executives would see a bit of divine justice and get indicted, imprisoned and clad in orange jumpsuits along the way. And maybe the old ball and chain for these greedhead executive assholes to approximate the toll the body takes building their behemoths.

Mayor De Blasio Irritably Tells Student Reporter He’s Not Doing Affordable Housing Right Now

The High Line Park, New York, N.Y.

NY Daily News: Mayor de Blasio finally visits the High Line eight years after opening

Mayor de “Faustio”, still on his city hall reality tour, had his massive crack team of aides arranged a trip on the upscale High Line Park in Chelsea. The stroll was accompanied by students from the P.S. 33 Chelsea Prep School, some of his commissioners and his nemesii gaggle of reporters.

The nice unseasonably humid day was marred as Mayor Big Slow arrived 20 minutes late and seemed grossly unprepared about the aspects of the upscale gentrifying park and the fact that he has never visited it once in his term. (Well, he has been busy) The students were very knowledgeable about the lush greenery around them, enough to impress the mayor and were very observant and inquisitive about the press accompanying him and how he was trying to ignore them. He responded to the kids that they “followed him around”. Silly press doing their jobs to inform the public about accountability from elected officials and authority figures.

But it’s where he went later to his alma mater at New York University to meet with an old roommate of his that he dropped this Freudian slip grenade to a student reporter as he was exiting the building.

According to The New York Times:

As Mr. de Blasio left the university, a student reporter named Sam Raskin, tried to ask a question about affordable housing. “We’re not doing that right now,” the mayor said as he made his way out the building

Emphasis fucking mine.

“We’re not doing that right now”. Ok, now this quote is isolated and out of context. And there is no video, as of yet, to see the expression on his face or body language delivering these lines. It definitely is though, his usual response when he refuses to answer questions that doesn’t, to him, involve what he policy is discussing, as when he bolted from a press conference in front of a billionaire row tower in Midtown. But now as witnessed by journalists during his recent electioneering stroll as he refused to answer any questions pertaining to policy and his plans and policies when/if he gets re-elected, it has devolved into full blown venomous contempt at anyone that asks a question, no matter how soft, like when he was asked about the sumac the student pointed out, but certainly those that are pertinent to the constituency.

“We’re not doing that right now”. This dismissive and insulting response may just damned himself and his mayoralty despite it being an attempt to insultingly blow off a budding journalist. And might have put any credibility regarding his affordable housing plan into the crapper. Where it belongs. For the majority of these mixed income buildings, even the measly 20% that thousands of the poorest citizens of the 5 boroughs are not affordable at all. The area median incomes continue to rise because of overvalued real estate speculation, more luxury towers keep rising and even the market rate apts. in these new buildings are having an effect on the actual rents and the qualifications for yearly salaries to apply for them. A recent crop of new buildings in Brooklyn and Long Island City measly affordable apartments start at around the 800-1000 range while the majority of the units go for the insane and fabricated market rates of $2,000 for a studio, $2,500 for a one bedroom, and $3,000 for a two bedroom.

The real crazy part of de Faustio’s 10 year plan for 200,000 affordable apartments, in congruence with probably more than a half a million luxury apartments, is that the plan was already in fruition back in 2012 (and even that plan was horrible and detrimental). So even though he implemented his policy just last year, some of the buildings and the actual policy were already being used, so technically, Bill hasn’t produced much. Except make this affordable housing scheme even worse, by licking the boots of his predatory developer donors and listening to the technocratic stratagems of their public relations firms and his deputy mayor Alicia Glen.

Another take from the Times piece should make anyone pause at this man’s disgusting obliviousness, which possibly the kids there did too. At 26th street on the High Line, there is this big window overlooking the street and acts as a cinemascope for the view east, which consists of the project housing across 10th avenue just across the street from the upscale leisure and arts scenes and tower utopia that have engulfed the stretch:

The entourage stopped at an area of benches set out over 26th Street and looked through a frame at a public housing development across the street.

“It is just a big open viewing station; that’s all it does?” Mr. de Blasio asked.

“It was meant to showcase a lot of what people don’t see in the neighborhood,” Robert Hammond, the co-founder and executive director of the Friends of the High Line, told him.

Very cool,” the mayor said.

Very. Cool. If he can only get a view of the utter lack of coolness of similar projects in other places, as those buildings roofs continue to leak, mold continues to fester, and rats and roaches continue to invade and spread disease. This is what’s going on now, as it’s been for nearly a half century, with the real affordable housing in the city he governs.

Student journalist Sam Raskin may have finally got the correct answer from this mayor about the affordable housing stagnation going on, albeit inadvertently. And de Faustio may have exposed himself as the stupid fucking idiot he is just because he couldn’t answer a simple question. Especially something he deceptively bragged about not long ago too.

He knows what it is, and that’s why he is stonewalling. 2 recent stories detail how his current plan is not helping the working poor at all, and how the overvalued rental market rate is exacerbating the costs of living here for the majority of tax-paying residents whose salaries can’t keep up when the rent is due compared with the wealthier citizens, who can actually afford to live in these alleged affordable housing buildings and have a better chance winning the lottery for the apartments they would qualify for, and still have a robust savings account.

Good job Mr. Raskin and the kids at P.S. 33, you all did more to expose this fauxgressive neoliberal jerk than what the dailies and the prosecutors have tried to do since his elected office transgressions began 3 years ago.
